In a landmark collaboration, Sucro Can Sourcing and Hamilton-Oshawa Port Authority (HOPA Ports) have unveiled plans to construct Canada’s largest sugar refinery. This ambitious project is poised to redefine the nation’s sugar industry landscape.
The groundbreaking initiative was announced jointly by Sucro Can Sourcing, a subsidiary of Can Foods Inc., and HOPA Ports, a key player in facilitating international trade through its port operations in Hamilton and Oshawa.
With an estimated investment of $135 million CAD, the state-of-the-art refinery is expected to significantly bolster Canada’s sugar production capacity. The facility’s strategic location within HOPA Ports’ territory offers unparalleled access to global markets, positioning Canada as a major player in the sugar processing and supply chain.
The new sugar refinery will have an annual refining capacity of 1 million metric tonnes New plant is expected to open in 2025.

Food and Beverage Processing Sector
Ontario’s food and beverage manufacturing sector is the third largest in North America with manufacturing revenues of more than $48 billion. The sector has more than 45,000 establishments in the province, employing over 104,800 people.

Industry analysts anticipate that the refinery’s inauguration will herald a new era of growth and opportunity for Canada’s sugar sector, paving the way for increased self-sufficiency and competitiveness in the global marketplace.
